Alan Gelfand

Alan Gelfand, a public defender in Los Angeles, was expelled from the Socialist Workers Party in 1979 after raising questions about the connections between SWP leader Joseph Hansen and US and Soviet intelligence agencies. He later filed a lawsuit demanding the federal government remove its agents from the SWP and name all current and past informers. Key documents relating to the lawsuit are contained in the two volume set The Gelfand Case: A Legal History of the Exposure of US Government Agents in the Leadership of the Socialist Workers Party, available through Mehring Books.
