Hurricane Katrina: Social Consequences and Political Lessons
This pamphlet brings together 20 articles and statements published by the World Socialist Web Site in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, presenting an assessment of the social significance and political implications of the disaster.
This pamphlet provides important insights into the ongoing catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico following the explosion on a BP oil rig. The parallels between the two events are striking. At that time the Bush administration could not be roused to take elementary steps to safeguard lives and property. Then, after the hurricane struck, millions watched in disbelief as desperate residents begged for help.
Katrina exposed the enormous decline of American capitalism. In the name of “free market principles” successive US administrations have dismantled the social safety net and allowed basic infrastructure to deteriorate while unleashing military violence across the globe.
