Description

Written by Emanuele Saccarelli, a Professor at San Diego State University, this book examines the political thought and legacy of Antonio Gramsci and Leon Trotsky against the background of the rise and consolidation of Stalinism in the 1920s and 1930s.

Saccarelli argues that Gramsci is popular in academia for all the wrong reasons. The ongoing academic misappropriations of Gramsci were prepared and enabled by a long history of Stalinist falsifications. At the same time, by reviewing the salient episodes of his political life, the book demonstrates that Gramsci never represented a genuine political alternative to Stalinism. Saccarelli makes the case that only Trotskyism constitutes such an alternative. The book explains why Trotsky is virtually ignored in academia and examines the historical record of his opposition to Stalinism, establishing its principled character and importance for our time.
