  1. Fight plant closures: The case for rank-and-file factory committees

Fight plant closures: The case for rank-and-file factory committees

The announcement by General Motors in November 2018 of the closure of five factories in North America and the elimination of some 15,000 jobs is a frontal attack on autoworkers and the entire working class. The jobs massacre is the spearhead for a new restructuring, threatening the jobs of millions around the world. The consequences of GM's closure of plants in Detroit, Michigan; Lordstown, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario will be devastating for autoworkers and these communities. This attack calls for a unified international response by the working class. Central to this is the formation of rank-and-file factory committees, independent from the corporatist trade unions, to link autoworkers with other sections of the working class coming into struggles, such as teachers, Amazon workers, steelworkers, and United Parcel Service workers. This pamphlet outlines the central political and historical issues in this fight and makes the case for rank-and-file factory committees, independent of the unions, and a socialist political movement of the working class.
