  1. Why Study the Russian Revolution

    Why Study the Russian Revolution

The 1917 Russian Revolution was the most significant event of the 20th century. The taking of power by the Russian working class under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky transformed the course of human history and reverberates to this day. Between February and October 1917 Russia was shaken by two monumental revolutions. The first overthrew the Romanov aristocracy that had ruled for more than 300 years. The second overthrew the bourgeois Provisional Government and established the first socialist workers state in history. These events continue to generate debate and controversy. The essays in these two volumes are unique in that they are written from a Marxist perspective looking back from the vantage point of 100 years and putting the events of 1917 in a contemporary perspective under conditions of a world wracked by immensesocial and political contradictions. 3. John Heartfield - Laughter is a Devastating Weapon

John Heartfield - Laughter is a Devastating Weapon

Laughter is a Devastating Weapon (Tate Publishing, October 2015) is an exciting publication devoted to the work of German artist John Heartfield (1891-1968), known for his incomparably dark, mocking, politically pointed photocollages. The title aptly refers to the satirical power of Heartfield’s artistic efforts, which earned him one of the top positions on the Nazis’ “most wanted list” when they came to power in 1933 and nearly cost him his life. Authors David King and Ernst Volland present a fascinating group of Heartfield images from King’s own collection. Volland is a German artist, whose work includes photomontages, as well as efforts in other media. Also an author and curator, Volland has brought to light overlooked figures such as Yevgeni Khaldei, the Soviet photographer best known for the iconic image of a Soviet soldier raising a flag over the Reichstag in Berlin in May 1945. A Quarter Century of War: The US Drive for Global Hegemony 1990 - 2016 (ePub)

Beginning with the first Persian Gulf conflict of 1990–91, the United States has been at war continuously for a quarter century. While using propaganda catchphrases, such as “defense of human rights” and “War on Terror,” to conceal the real aims of its interventions in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, as well as its confrontation with Russia and China, the United States has been engaged in a struggle for global hegemony. The essays and lectures in this volume, informed by a Marxist understanding of the contradictions of American and world imperialism, analyze the progression of military interventions and geopolitical crises as they have developed over the past quarter century, not as a sequence of isolated episodes, but as moments in the unfolding of an interconnected historical process.
