Why has the US been continuously at war for the past quarter-century, and where is the Anti-War movement? Review by HJ
Important themes in this fascinating book:
1. The first Gulf War, by the US against Iraq in 1991, was not to defend Kuwait. It was the start of an imperialist redivision of the world, where former colonies that had achieved some measure of independence and development were to be re-subjugated.
2. The dissolution of the USSR in late 1991 was the signal for the US elites to assert US hegemony all over the world, through war.
3. The demise of the USSR was actually the failure of the nation-state system; the more the world economy globalized, the more its autarchic economy suffered. It marked the failure of the PostWar setup, based on US economic power.
4. The US government was driven to aggressive war all over the world, to try to overcome its economic decline, especially in the manufacturing sector.
5. The "War of Terror" was an excuse to wage endless wars abroad, and to destroy democratic rights & living standards at home. Bush introduced the words rendition, water boarding, enhanced interrogation; Obama specialized in drone killings, jailing or journalists & whistleblowers, and expanded wars.
6. The end of the USSR intensified the crisis within the "intelligentsia", which swung over to a defense of US wars and the abandonment of "truth" as a category. With the election of Obama, the pseudo-left dropped all pretense that it opposed US imperialism, and instead embraced new sociocidal wars against Libya and Syria.
7. A new world war is inevitable, if the working class does not intervene to prevent it. Young people and workers are being driven into struggle; a leadership must be built to channel that struggle in a socialist direction, against the entire capitalist system.
6. To wage "War on War", the new antiwar movement must be international, based on the working class, anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist.
