Down with the Namphy Junta! US hands off Haiti!
This pamphlet reviews the record of American oppression of Haiti from the invasion of US Marines in 1915 through the bloody reign of “Papa Doc” and “Baby Doc” up to the tragic events of November 29, 1987 when thugs loyal to the US-backed regime of General Henri Namphy killed scores of unarmed Haitians attempting to exercise their right to vote. Namphy was installed by Washington after the fall of the hated Duvalier dictatorship in 1986. His regime maintained all of the brutal methods of repression of its predecessor, including the notorious Tonton Macoutes. At the same time the US administration of President Ronald Reagan, with the support of congressional Democrats, sought to use the election violence in Haiti as a pretext for military intervention.
The Bulletin, the weekly newspaper of the Workers League, forerunner of the Socialist Equality Party, warned at the time, “Every American worker must be clear that any US invasion of Haiti, no matter under what ‘democratic’ and ‘liberating’ slogans it is conducted, will be imperialist aggression aimed at securing the interests of the US multinationals and banks and savagely repressing the struggles of the popular masses.”
